Fabric shrinkage is one of the most common reasons a handmade garment stops fitting after the first wash. You cut it perfectly. You sewed it carefully. Then it comes out of the machine two sizes smaller and you're back to square one. The frustrating part is that shrinkage is almost always preventable, once you understand what's causing it.
What actually causes fabric to shrink
Most fabric shrinkage comes down to one of three things: fibre relaxation, mechanical agitation, or heat. Each behaves slightly differently and affects different fabric types.
Fibre relaxation happens because yarns are stretched and tensioned during weaving or knitting. When those fibres meet water for the first time, they relax back toward their natural state. This is why even cold-water washing causes some fabrics to shrink on the first wash. The tension that was built in during manufacturing simply releases.
Mechanical agitation is the washing machine doing its job too aggressively. Natural fibres like wool and cotton have microscopic surface scales. Tumbling in hot water causes those scales to interlock, pulling the fabric tighter. This is the process behind felting, and it's irreversible.
Heat is the third culprit, and the most controllable. High dryer temperatures cause fibres to contract rapidly. Synthetic fabrics are particularly vulnerable here, even though they're often marketed as low-maintenance. Polyester and nylon can distort permanently under high heat, which isn't the same as traditional shrinkage but produces a similar result.
Which fabrics shrink the most
Natural fibres shrink more than synthetics, as a general rule. Cotton is the most commonly encountered offender in a home sewing stash. A woven quilting cotton can lose 3–5% of its dimensions on the first wash. Linen shrinks similarly, and unlike cotton, it can continue to shrink slightly over the first few washes before stabilising.
Wool is the most dramatic shrinker. A wool knit washed incorrectly can reduce by 30% or more. This isn't fibre relaxation; it's felting, and no amount of stretching will bring it back.
Bamboo and rayon behave more like cotton than synthetics. Both are made from natural cellulose, and both will relax in water. If you're working with bamboo fabric, expect a first-wash shrinkage of around 3–4% without pre-treatment.
Polyester, nylon, and acrylic shrink very little in normal washing conditions. Their risk is heat distortion in the dryer rather than traditional fibre relaxation. Cotton-polyester blends sit in the middle: the cotton component will try to shrink, but the polyester content resists it, which can result in puckering rather than even shrinkage across the whole piece.
Pre-washing: the step that fixes most problems
Pre-washing fabric before you cut is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent shrinkage from ruining a finished project. The idea is simple: let the fabric do its shrinking before the garment exists, not after.

After washing, dry the fabric the way you plan to dry the finished item. If you'll tumble dry on low, do that during pre-washing too. Air drying after a machine wash is a common mistake: it means the tumble dryer's heat-shrinkage hasn't happened yet, and it will happen the first time you dry the finished garment.
How to pre-wash without damaging the fabric
A few things to watch for during pre-washing:
- Serge or zigzag the raw edges before washing. Woven fabrics fray dramatically in a wash cycle, and loose threads can tangle, distort, or pull the grain.
- Use a colour-catcher sheet for new dark or saturated fabrics. First washes can release excess dye, and you don't want that landing on other fabrics in the load.
- Press the fabric flat after drying before you store or cut it. Heat from an iron helps the grain settle back into alignment after the stress of washing.

When you've skipped pre-washing and it's too late
It happens. The fabric sat in your stash for months, you got excited about a project, and you cut without pre-washing. Now the finished item has shrunk after its first launder.
For minor shrinkage in cotton or linen, re-wetting the garment and blocking it flat while damp can recover some of the lost dimension. Pin or stretch it gently to the original measurement, then allow it to air dry completely. This works because the fibres are still relaxed from the wash and can be repositioned before they dry into a new shape.
Wool felting can't be reversed. Once the scales have interlocked, they won't release. The only option is to repurpose the piece: felted wool makes excellent appliqué, bag lining, or small accessories.
For synthetics that have distorted in the dryer, a steamer can sometimes help. Hold the steamer 5–10 centimetres away, apply steam, and gently stretch the distorted area while it's warm. It won't always work, but for mild heat distortion it's worth trying before you cut the loss.
Building shrinkage allowance into patterns
If you're designing your own patterns or adapting commercial ones, you can build a shrinkage buffer into the cutting dimensions. Measure your pre-washed fabric first to see how much it actually moved, then add that same percentage back into any future cuts from the same fabric type.

That absorbed moisture won't cause shrinkage, but it can cause the grain to shift slightly and make cutting less accurate. A quick press before cutting is always worth doing, regardless of how long the fabric has been sitting.
Shrinkage is predictable once you know what to expect from each fibre type. Pre-wash consistently, dry correctly, and press before cutting. Those three steps eliminate the vast majority of post-sewing surprises.
